New Music – Why Awake

Why Awake, a collective mainly consisting of Aaron Joseph Newman as the main writer and singer/rapper along with Kori Munson, known professionally as Apollo Lane, as producer, has successfully sunk their teeth into the Electro-Pop/Alternative Rap genres. The ranging styles of songs on their self-titled album have made it difficult to directly pin down exactly where Why Awake stands in terms of genre specifics. With songs such as ‘Slider’ and ‘Neon Morphine’ that fit in a genre with The Weeknd and Portugal. The Man paired along side of ‘So So,’ ‘Start Over,’ and ‘Rita’ which can put WA in the realms of Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran, in conjunction with ‘Things We Do for Fun’ and ‘VTN’ that are closer to Kid Cudi, the album is a musical odyssey through different styles that are all connected by the crisp and consistent production. Aaron Joseph Newman excels as a crooner and a rapper across the entire project.

The feel of the ‘Why Awake’ album is that of someone reaching into the depths of their emotions and pulling them out for someone else to see and relate to. Drawing on the pains of losing parents to cancer and losing lovers to others, Aaron’s writing provokes emotions. Even on a song such as ‘Jackie Kennedy’ that has an upbeat, toe-tapping sound, the lyrics pull on the pains associated with relationships. But, through all of that, the message of continuing to push through and to succeed are clear in the lyrics.

‘Why Awake’ is something new that also feels familiar. Something refreshing in a world of cookie-cutter albums.

‘Slider,’ the lead single off of Why Awake’s self-titled debut album, is now available across all platforms.

“Ultraviolet” by Aaron Joseph Newman

Aaron Joseph Newman has released his latest track, “Ultraviolet,” accompanied by a video that captures “a night of partying that may not be remembered, but the actions of the night will never be forgotten.”
The track is produced by Apollo Lane and is featuring Chelsea McIntosh.

I have a feeling that this well-produced, catchy track is going to become a staple of summer of ’16 playlists.

Aaron Joseph Newman – Super 2000

One of my favorite up-and-coming rappers/musicians is Aaron Joseph Newman. His usual brand of realistic verses and self-deprecating lyrics soak the tracks with realism. But sometimes, like with “Super 2000,” Aaron just wants to remind you that he’s slick behind the mic and has some crazy-good lyricism. Continue reading Aaron Joseph Newman – Super 2000

Tabitha – Dear Summer

Tabitha has brought another heater with her latest release – “Dear Summer.” The classic Just Blaze beat, that Jay-Z originally rapped over, is laced with raw yet soulful lyrics. The release of “Dear Summer comes a week after she introduced herself with another old school feeling track in “Shook Ones.”

Tabitha is being produced by and is writing with Grammy winner Timothy Bloom. This is the second release from her upcoming mixtape.

Flint Eastwood – Detroit’s New Musical Gem

Every so often I am sent some music by up and coming artists. There is a new artist out of Detroit, Michigan named Flint Eastwood that was put onto my radar recently.

Her music is reminiscent of Lorde. She is brand new, at least to me, but she has a polished sound. It’s definitely worth taking a listen to. Her EP is called ‘Small Victories,’ with a video for the single “Glitches” coming out soon. Continue reading Flint Eastwood – Detroit’s New Musical Gem

This ESL Pop Culture Class Project Was a ‘Big Hit’

Video Title

My level 3 Pop Culture class was a lot of fun. I got the opportunity to introduce my students, who were from six different countries, to American pop culture. This gives the students topics to talk about when assimilating into the American university. It helps the students to not be left out of conversations between future classmates. These topics are now familiar to the students. Also, it lets us practice and improve English skills in a fun manner. Continue reading This ESL Pop Culture Class Project Was a ‘Big Hit’

When Grammy Winner Timothy Bloom Heard About a Family in Danger of Eviction…

When Grammy winner Timothy Bloom heard about Joquann and LaRae Montgomery, along with their children, of Paterson, NJ., being on the verge of being evicted, due their inability to pay rent, he stepped up big.

The Grammy award winner teamed up with Make Room to help them avoid eviction, which they did. Bloom also performed live in their living-room to “give them a voice.”

From the Make Room website.

“Make Room N.J.:
The Montgomery Family

Joquann and LaRae work three jobs to keep a roof over their heads in Paterson, NJ. And like 46% of the renters in their city, more than half of their income goes to rent. Grammy winner Timothy Bloom knows what they are going through and gives a Make Room Concert for the 1st in their living room to help lift them up.

Play the video set to see the Montgomery family story and concert performances of “Wooooooo!!!” and “Stand In The Way (Of My Love)”.”
